Ms. Badger's Social Butterflies
Your one-stop resource for all things 4th grade Social Studies
Please Don't Tell Me Your Dog Ate It...
---------------------------------
This year your child will become not only great historians, but well-rounded news reporters in events that are happening currently in our nation and world.
Each week your child will be given a current event template to complete. If a child loses his/her copy, one is provided for printing under the next subtitle under this section. The student should then use online resources, news-worthy magazines, and/or newspapers to research a current event of their interest that is related to Social Studies (articles related to culture, community, politics, geography are some acceptable examples. Sports, entertainment and obituaries are not allowed). At times, some current events will be distributed in class by me, but most will be what the students would like to learn more about. The student should not repeat any topic they have already researched. They should challenge themselves to research a variety of topics. The events should have occured within the past two weeks from the date assigned. Your child 's article should be of age-appropriate length. One to two sentence paragpahs are unacceptable. Videos are unacceptable. Your child should READ the news article and fill out the current event template provided for them. The article should answer each of the five questions and the bonus question. Please print the article out and attach it to the current event template. Do not email me any homework assignments.
Your child will alternate completing Social Studies and Science current events.. All homework is assigned on Monday and due on Friday - no exceptions! If a week is shortened, the homework assignment will be given the first day of the shortened school week and due the last day of the shortened school week, whichever is applicable. Please encourage your child to record their homework assignments weekly in his/her agenda to help with their planning and pacing. For every school day that your child's assignment is late, 10 points will be deducted from their final score for the assignment.
I will grade homework for completion, accurate comprehension of the material, capitalization, and punctuation. Commentary will be provided for improvement. All answers should be recorded in complete sentences. Single-word answers are not acceptable, even if the question can be answered with a single word. The correct completion of the assignment will determine your child's grade. Siblings should not research the same articles. Please monitor your child's article selection to ensure that the article is age and content appropriate. Also, check behind your child to make sure all points are earned for correct completion. There are some resources under the Virtual Resource subtitle on this webpage to get you started. More will be added and suggestions are welcomed.
As the students familarize themselves with how to research current events, the template will change every quarter and become more detailed. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at lbadger@atlanta.k12.ga.us.
